Intersil Launches Two High-Performance Zero-Voltage Switching ``ZVS'' Full-Bridge PWM Controllers
Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ:ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, announced today two new high-performance, low pin count, zero-voltage switching (ZVS) full-bridge PWM controllers. The ISL6752 and ISL6753 are designed to optimize performance, cost and time-to-market for 400 watt and higher AC/DC switching power supplies. Packed with many protection and control features, the ISL6752 and ISL6753 are designed for file server, communication infrastructure and industrial equipment applications.
"Intersil has combined a straightforward IC architecture with our high-speed sub-micron process technology to offer these industry-leading solutions for today's demanding power supply designers," said Jeff Strang, product marketing manager for Intersil's Isolated Power Products. "We focused on the two major shortcomings of existing ZVS full-bridge controllers -- high price and complexity -- and solved both with the ISL6752 and ISL6753. Our customers are already recording design wins with these easy-to-use and cost-effective PWM controllers."
The ISL6752 PWM is an excellent choice for ZVS full-bridge applications requiring adjustable synchronous rectifier drive, such as +12V output file server power supplies. For applications employing conventional output rectification, such as -48V output telecom rectifiers, the ISL6753 is the perfect PWM controller.
Intersil's advanced BiCMOS design gives these devices excellent performance including a very accurate over-current limit threshold and low operating current. Additionally, they feature an adjustable oscillator frequency up to 2MHz, internal over-temperature protection, precision dead time and resonant delay control, and short propagation delays. Multi-pulse suppression ensures alternating output pulses at low duty cycles where pulse skipping may otherwise occur. The ISL6753 features adjustable soft start to reduce voltage stresses and the ISL6752 includes synchronous rectifier outputs with adjustable timing.
ZVS Full-bridge Operation
The ISL6752 and ISL6753 are zero-voltage switching (ZVS) full-bridge PWM controllers. Rather than phase-modulating two half-bridges, as competing products do, the ISL6752 and ISL6753 drive the upper switches at a fixed 50 percent duty cycle while trailing-edge-modulating the lower switches. This approach yields excellent conversion efficiencies while greatly simplifying the architecture of the PWM controller.
